IDAHO BREWERY UPDATES WITH JIM DANDY AND WESTERN COLLECTIVE

By Bob Hubler

Here's the latest Idaho Brewery News featuring a bit about Idaho's Newest Breweries: Jim Dandy Brewing in Pocatello, and Idaho and Western Collective Brewing in Boise, Idaho.

JIM DANDY BREWING

First of all, I would highly recommend visiting this brewery if you ever visit Pocatello.  The ambiance is incredible.  The crowd was made up of old, young and children, too;  but no dogs unless they are service dogs, of course.  Opened on July 4th, this place has quickly become a favorite hang out for many of the patrons that I talked to.  When we visited, they  only had three of their own beers on tap, because they can't keep up with the demand.  But they have a solution; a new fermentor is on the way which will allow them to increase their production.

Their goal is to have ten of their own beers on tap to give everyone a chance to drink their favorite style of beer.  I really liked their Hazy IPA, it was one of the best I have tried since the style came into vogue.

Jim Dandy is the newest member of the Idaho Brewers United.

From the outside, you would never guess that a beautiful tap room and brew house was hidden inside the Jim Dandy Brewing building.

The Entrance to the Brewery
The Jim Dandy Brewery is the brainchild of owners Davis Gove and Hailee Matkin.  Both Davis and Hailee brew the beer that they sell.  Hailee, who has a degree in micro biology, is the second woman brewer in Pocatello, following the footsteps of Penny Pink, owner and operator of the Portneuf Valley Brewery.

Both Davis and Hailee grew up in Pocatello, but honed their brewing skills at breweries in Washington and Montana.  Now they are back in their hometown with a brand new state of the art brew house and tap room.

Davis and Hailee, Owners and Brewers

The inside of the brewery reflects the railroad theme of the surrounding area, once knows as the Iron Triangle. For the last hundred plus years, this area was filled with railroad workers.  The brewery was named in honor of the past Jim Dandy Bar (and brothel) that took care of many  of those rail road workers.

WESTERN COLLECTIVE BREWING

We visited the new Western Collective Brewing temporary Tap House on the soft opening.  We met Cary Hampton Prewitt, his fiance Melissa, and Head Brewer Keith Forsgren; all new to Boise.  Guns and Oil beer is celebrating their Five Year Anniversary, but they have always had to contract other breweries to brew their beer.  This will be their first production brewery.

Head Brewer Keith, Owner Cary and his Fiance Melissa
This new Garden City brewery will be the production brewery for all the Guns and Oil beer, mainly distributed in Texas, but also on tap in many local restaurants in Boise.  They currently ship their beer back to Texas to be canned and distributed, put plan to add their own canning line in Boise in the near future.

Guns and Oil Brewing is all about Lagers, but the brewery in Garden City will feature special beers for the taphouse only.  Wyatt Hazy IPA was introduced last Friday with more diverse beer to be released in the coming days at the brewery taphouse.

Check them out, they are a Beer Buddies Hub.

CROOKED FENCE AND 2018 BREWERY UPDATES

By Bob Hubler

Idaho could boast a total of 61 breweries at the beginning of 2018 including Heavens Gate in Riggins that did not make my 2017 year end list.  We have added FIVE more breweries since then and one brewery has reopened with a new location and new owners.

CROOKED FENCE NEW TAPROOM IS OPEN

New owners Jeff and Maerene Cutler unite with the former Crooked Fence Head Brewer, Jeff Winn to bring back some of Boise's favorite Beers.  Jeff and Maerene moved the 15 bbl brewing system back to Garden City from the Crooked Flats Highway 16 location.  The new address for the brewery and taproom is 5220 North Sawyer Avenue in Garden City only a coupe of blocks from their original location.

Jeff and Maerene want all the old customers to know that they will continue to honor their Crooked Fence Club Cards.  They also plan to add sandwiches to the menu soon.

New Owner Jeff Cutler prepares to fill a Growler
Crooked Fence will have a Grand Opening on Friday, July 20th from 3:00 to 10:00

NEW BREWERY IN POCATELLO

Jim Dandy Brewing has opened a brewery and tap house.  They will rely on food trucks to serve food for their patrons.  They will become Pocatello's second brewery located just a half mile north of the Portneuf Valley Brew Pub that opened in 1996.

NEW BREWERY IN RIGGINS

This brewery actually opened in 2017.  Heavens Gate Brewery was opened in late Spring of 2017 by Paul Gatti who is also the brewer.  The Taproom for the brewery is located in Summervilles Bar & Cafe.

NEW BREWERY OPENING IN SANDPOINT

Utara Brewing Company is currently brewing beer and will begining serving their own beer in their Brew Pub in the next few weeks.  This unique brewery will  the brewery #65 in active Idaho Breweries.  Utara is unique among most craft breweries in that it well serve India Cuisine instead of the normal burgers that most brew pubs serve.  There beer will also be unique as they will brew English Style Ales.   I assume that an India Pale Ale will be one of their offerings.

GUNS AND OIL BREWERY IS BREWING IN GARDEN  CITY

The long awaited Guns and Oil Brewery is brewing and preparing to open the Tap Room around the end of July.  You will remember this location from the days when Payette Brewing brewed their beer there.

WHAT BREWERY WILL BE THE NEXT IDAHO BREWERY?

Koto Brewing in Twin Falls Idaho.  My latest response from the Koto Brewing owner when I asked about an opening date was "best we can say is soon".  So I think they will be open by the end of Summer.

IN ADDITION TO THE NEW BREWERIES, TWO NEW CRAFT BEER VENUES HAVE RECENTLY OPENED IN BOISE

BLU

I visited Bru on Tuesday tried out their pour your own beer system.  I was impressed.  I just tried a few ounces of several beers.    Total Cost $3.07!  It was easy and I really like the Idaho Only concept.
I will be taking my out of town visitors here to show off this unique venue.

HOPS AND BOTTLES

I visited Hops and Bottles on opening day.  This  Boise's first true bottle shop that does not sell Brew supplies or food.  With nearly 400 beer choices, it will be the place to go as new beers appear in Idaho.  I like that you can grab a beer out of the cooler and drink it there along with the many beers on tap.  Go down and visit Mark and Barley and get your favorite beer.

2018 IDAHO BREWERY UPDATES #1

Latest Brewery Updates as of January 31, 2018

by Bob Hubler

Photo of Coeur d'Alene from the Beer d'Alene website

I have received a lot of input over the last several weeks about new breweries in Northern Idaho.

First of all, I would like everyone to check out Beer d' Alene,   This is a new website created by Russell Mann to track the craft breweries in the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho area.  Also check out the companion Facebook Group Page.  Russell was kind enough to provide me with information about two new breweries slated to open up in 2018.  He also let me know that the Down Draft Brewing has re-opened under new management.

Check the list below of potential up and coming Idaho breweries including Bent Tree Brewing in Athol and Westwood Brewing in Rathburn.  Thanks to Steve Armstrong, I have also added Clearwater Brewing in Kamiah.  Special Thanks to Sheila Francis for telling me about the Matchwood Brewing and Utara Brewing both coming to Sandpoint.  While researching breweries in Sandpoint, I found another planned brewery, Roots & Shoots Brewing.

Table of Idaho Breweries planning to open in the future.  New Additions in bold.

Bent Tree Brewing is planning to be a nano-brewery in the small town of Athol, Idaho.  They are in the early stages of getting permits and ordering equipment.

Westwood Brewing is a currently restaurant and bar.   They plan to build the brewery addition in 2018.  They currently serve liquor, beer and wine.

Matchwood Brewing is in the building stages and will open in 2018 in Sandpoint.

IDAHO BREWERIES: LOOKING AHEAD TO 2018

By Bob Hubler

What is on the horizon for Idaho breweries in 2018?  The following five breweries will most likely open in 2018.  All five are in various stages of construction:

# # Brewery Name (Website) Idaho Location Brewery Type Facebook Owners/Comment
81 58 Hardware Brewing Kendrick Brew Pub FB Currently Restaurant Only
82 59 Koto Brewing Twin Falls Brew Pub FB Shane Cook
83 60 Guns and Oil Boise Tap Room  Original Payette Brewery location
84 61 Danelion Brewing Melba Tap Room FB Nathan Guidinger
85 62 Spring Creek Brewing Boise Area Brew Pub FB Jeff Badigian/Marc Grubert

The Hardware Brewing Company was started by Doug and Christine Lohman.  They already have started their restaurant in a former Hardware store on Main Street Kendrick, Idaho and working hard to start brewing.  They could be serving their own beer as soon as March 2018.

The Koto Brewing Company aka "Twin Falls Brewing" aka "Nameless Brewing" is planning to open in the first quarter of 2018.  Shane Cook, the owner, currently operates a Coffee and Sandwich shop in Twin Falls.

Three of the new breweries will be in the Treasure Valley bringing the local brewery count to 25 breweries.  See the list at BoiseBeerCulture.com  Two of these breweries are being built from "ground up" like Powderhaus Brewing in Boise.

The Guns and Oil Brewing Company is an established brewing company out of Texas.  They currently brew their beer at other breweries.  They purchased the original Payette Brewing facility and are currently upgrading it to have a larger tap room.   The Guns and Oil Brewing Company specializes in lagers.  They will make a majority of lagers at their new production facility in Garden City

The Danelion Brewing Company is not on a lot of local craft beer fans radar.  This brewery is being built by Nathan Guidinger on his small farm near Melba, Idaho.  His building is  complete and most of his equipment has been delivered. He is building this brewery on his own.  All the work is being done by his friends and family.  So this brewery could be up and running in the second half of 2018 or the first half of 2019.

The Spring Creek Brewing Company is the brain child of Jeff Badigian and Marc Grubert.  This brewery is being built from the "ground up", meaning that they did not buy an existing building for their brewery.  Their brewery and pizzeria will be located in the Avimore Community just northwest of Boise.  They are currently seeking investors.  Check here for investment opportunities.  They also plan to open in the second half of 2018.

The Three Breweries below are still in the planning stages and will probably open after 2018:

86 63 2C Family Brewing Nampa  Alvin Mullins Building Aquired

We are very sad to say goodbye to Bob Lonseth's Meridian brewery that will close at the end of January 2018.  Bob is optimistic that Slanted Rock Brewing will open again somewhere in the Treasure Valley.

2017 IDAHO BREWERIES REVIEW

A LOOK BACK AT THE BREWERIES THAT OPENED AND CLOSED IN 2017

By Bob Hubler

When the Lost Grove Brewing brewery and tap room opened in Boise in 2017, they became the 80th brewery to open in the State of Idaho since 1984 when Tim Batt opened his Snake River Brewing brewery just west of Caldwell, Idaho.  Check out the current list of breweries in Idaho:  List of  Idaho Breweries

Idaho added six new breweries in 2017 albeit one brewery was a reopening of a brewery that closed the year before.  Moscow Brewing was the name of a brewery that operated in Moscow, Idaho from the 1882 until 1908.  Lucas Rate started a brewery in Moscow in 2013 and named it the "Moscow Brewing Company"  in honor of that first Moscow brewery.  His brewery shut down in 2016.
The Moscow Brewery reopened in June 2017 with new equipment and new owners.  See full story here.

New growth from old roots — Moscow Brewing Company grand reopening marks a continuation of a rich Moscow brewing history

The Radio Brewing Company became Kellogg's first brewery since the 1800's when it opened in April 2017.  They are a Brew Pub offering a full range of food to compliment their craft beer on tap. Check their blog out at http://www.radiobrewingcompany.com/blog-2/

The Shattuck Brewery became Idaho's 77th brewery when it opened in Elk River, Idaho in 2017.  This very unique Idaho brewery is on the road to nowhere located just outside of Idaho's remote Elk River.  This area is known as a great area to hunt in the fall.  Nate Schwartz is the founder, owner and brew master.  He plans to keep his taproom closed in the Winter months.

Three new breweries opened in Boise in the last half on 2017.  Clairvoyant Brewing and Lost Grove Brewing opened in buildings that were converted to breweries, while White Dog Brewing opened at the Table Rock Brew Pub location.

Check out the list below for information on each of the new Idaho breweries:

78 58 White Dog Brewing Boise   Tap Room Facebook
79 59 Clairvoyant Brewing Boise  Tap Room Facebook

It is always sad to see any brewery close it's doors.  Both of the breweries that closed down in 2017 were from North Idaho, just a few miles from each other. Click on the links below for their stories.

That's a wrap on the 2017 Idaho Brewery News.

The next BoiseBeerCulture Blog will be the forecast of the Idaho new brewery openings in 2018.
