NORTHERN IDAHO BREWERY TOUR - JULY 2016 PART 2

by Bob Hubler

HUNGA DUNGA BREWING

While Nelda and I were visiting Rants and Raves Brewery, Neil Marzolf talked about the Moscow, Idaho Brewing District.  He said that it started with Lucas's "Moscow Brewing".  Rants and Raves is just a couple of blocks south of the now closed Moscow Brewing.  He continued to tell me about the newest brewery in Idaho,  Hunga Dunga Brewing which is across the street and about a block north of R&R.  Although Hunga Dunga Brewing was not going to open for another hour, we stopped to take a look at Idaho's 52nd brewery.

Hunga Dunga Brewing Website                                        Hunga Dunga Brewing Facebook

We stopped at Hunga Dunga Brewing, Idaho's newest brewery as of mid July, about 3:00 PM (about an hour before they were officially open for business).  This brewery is built in a Quonset hut. We told them that we came up from Boise to visit the breweries in northern Idaho and they told us to come in and they gave us a tour.

We met Graham Lilly/Co-owner and Brewer. He showed us around the place.  Nate Suhr is the other owner. Graham told us that they had only been open 10 days. They have a 30 BBL system which is huge for a new brewery.  Graham told me that they plan to service a wide area including Spokane and they need the big system to do that.  He also told us that the name, Hunga Dunga comes from a Marx Brothers movie called Animal Cracker. Nelda even remembered the scene from the movie.

Like Rants & Raves, Hunga Dunga is a brewpub with a complete menu.  We wish we could have stayed longer and tried some of their food specialties - Menu.  Bartender Norman Embry told us the food was getting rave reviews from the Moscow residents.

Norman also told us that we had to taste their beer, so we were "forced" to try a few samples of what they had on tap. My favorite was their Oatmeal Pale Ale.  They also had a Summer Session Ale, a Red Rye and a Black IPA.  Their Black IPA was a little light for my taste, yet it was a good beer that fit the category.  Their Summer Ale was your classic lawnmower beer, light and refreshing.

Nelda and I came away from Moscow very impressed with their new "Brewing District"!  The last few  trips north, we never stopped in Moscow, but we will be back.  Moscow, Idaho is on the Craft Brewery Map with the addition of Hunga Dunga and Rants & Raves.  Both fine establishments well worth a visit from all those southern Idaho craft beer fans when they head north.

NORTHERN IDAHO BREWERY TOUR - JULY 2016 PART 1

by Bob Hubler

The last week of July, my wife and I took a trip to north Idaho to visit our friend Rori in St. Maries, Idaho and, of course, visit some breweries along the way.  We visited five established breweries and two brand new breweries: Hunga Dunga Brewing in Moscow and Post Falls Brewing in Post Falls.

Rants & Raves Brewery - Moscow Idaho

R&R Facebook                    R&R Website

Our  first stop on our North Idaho Brewery Tour was at Rants & Raves Brewing in Moscow, Idaho.
It was Sunday, but the whole crew was there.  Owners Ramirose Attebury and Neil Marzolf met us when we arrived and they were happy to give us the tour.

We were impressed with everyone there.  Lot of enthusiastic people that seem to have a lot of fun doing their jobs.  We arrived just prior to many patrons that were there for the brewery tour hosted by Rants & Raves.  Brewcation Northwest is a sister company to R&R and does custom brewery tours in Northern Idaho and Eastern Washington.

R&R is a brew pub that has some great pub food.  We shared an Irish Nachos that was so messy and so good...  Chef AJ takes great pride in all of his dishes and was happy to suggest a great dish that was gluten free and generous enough for both of us.  I wish we could have spent more time in Moscow.  Another couple had their Bangers and Mash.  The dish looked great and they said it was their favorite.  I am pretty sure it would be my favorite too.  R&R Menu

Of course we had to try all their beer.  Here is their Tap List when we were there:  Tap List
And it is true:  "They make Damn Good Beer."
My favorite was their Imperial IPA which is called Anonymous IIPA.  It seemed to be very similar to my homebrew IIPA.  I discovered that Tyler used the same hops that I use.  I also liked the T2's IPA which had a great citrus after taste.  Nelda's favorite was the R&R Brown Ale and we both liked The Common Punk, so we had filled our growler with the Punk.

While we were there, Cody Jensen stopped by.  I had corresponded with Cody when I was working on my blog about Rants & Raves being be 50th brewery in Idaho.  Cody does the PR work for RR. We got to chat for awhile about breweries in the area.

Tyler Hawkins, the RR head brewer came by a few minutes later.  Tyler is probably the youngest head brewer in Idaho, but also one of the most gifted.  Tyler made the jump from homebrewer to commercial brewer with little difficulty.  Tyler and his assistant brewer, Wyatt Dubois, make excellent beer.

Tyler brews a lot of single keg experimental beers.  He gave us a taste of his latest...a Braggot Ale that is made without hops and uses other spices for the bittering agent.  Braggot Ales have been around since the 13th Century.  The sample was fresh out of the fermenter before carbonation.  It was delicious.

The customer service at Rants and Raves is amazing.  Everyone was so friendly and they seemed genuinely interested in making sure that we had a great time there.

As we were leaving, Tim Kinkeade, the General Manager came after us on the street in front of Rants & Raves to introduce himself and make sure that we had had a good experience at Rants & Raves. We Did!

LATEST IDAHO BREWERY COUNT....LOST TWO, GAINED TWO FOR A TOTAL OF 50

Lost one in Boise, Lost one and gained one in Moscow and gained one in Buhl to bring Idaho back to a total of 50 breweries.

By Bob Hubler

Post Modern Brewers Closes

I was very sad about the Post Modern Brewery Closing for several reasons.

1 - I really enjoyed Head Brewer Marvin Kinney's Beer.  I have known Marvin for many years and I was thrilled for him when he got the chance to be a head brewer at a local Brew Pub.  Marvin brewed great beer while he was at Post Modern.  We never left the brewery without at least one Growler full of beer.

2 - We were there for the opening of Table Rock Brew Pub back in the 80's and we were there for the  opening of Post Modern and we were there on the last day they were open. We have been drinking beer in that location for nearly 30 years.  We will miss it.

3 - I will also miss the the Grind Burger.  My favorite Burger in Boise.  Ryan Hembree's Menu at the Grind was so good, he is an extremely talented chef.

4 - I feel bad for Rick Boyd.  I have known Rick and Tatiana since they opened Brewtopia (which later became Brewforia) over by Boise Town Square. We spent a lot of time at the Brewforia Meridian location.  The Brewforia in Eagle was combined with The Grind Restaurant and it was a great place to hang out.  We were bummed when that one closed.  Rick was so excited to get his own brewery combined with his Grind Restaurant when the former Table Rock Brewery location became available. When they opened Post Modern/The Grind brew pub, it included a Brewforia Growler Station and bottle shop next door.  It was a great set up for all the Craft Beer fans in Boise.

Moscow Brewing Closes

Moscow Brewing is no more. The first brewery in Moscow was Moscow Brewing, a 1.5 bbl nano brewery with a tap room. They  used three 15 gallon brew systems at brew their beer as shown below:
The Brew System at Moscow Brewing with Lucas Ray, brewer

This brewery was for sale during it's last days of operation in May.

Rants and Raves Brewery and Grill in Moscow Opens

Rants and Raves Brewery and Grill brought the total of Idaho Breweries back to 49.  R&R owner Ramirose Attebury and her husband Neil opened this Brew Pub in late November 2015 bringing Moscow, Idaho back to one brewery since Moscow Brewing recently closed. Rants and Raves features a 7 bbl brew system.  Tyler Hawkins is the head brewer and Wyatt DuBois is the assistant brewer at R&R.  Although the Brew pub opened in January 2016, they did not brew their own beer until April when all their licensing requirements were met.

Rants and Raves is a brew pub with a full menu of pub style food including the classic bangers and mash.  There is also a kids area and families are welcome.  Check out the links to two stories below for more information about the brewery and their head brewer.

Magic Valley Brewing opens a brew pub in Buhl

Magic Valley Brewing opened a brew pub in Buhl which brings the total to 50 breweries in the state. Rich White and his wife Judy are the owners of this new brew pub located just a few miles west of Twin Falls which currently has no brew pubs.  Rich is a "Master Brewer" and former part owner and brewer at White Water Brewing in California; but Rich is not a California Transplant, he grew up in the Buhl area.

The restaurant part of the brew pub features the pub menu including the classic Scotch Egg, one of my favorite pub foods.  The pub displays a wall of mugs for their "founders club".  Each mug has the patron's name on it and is larger than a regular pint glass.

2016 NABA/Mountain Brewer's Beer Fest Notes and Comments

by Bob Hubler

The North American Brewers Association (NABA) hosts an Annual Commercial Brewers Competition and Brew Fest the first week of June in  Idaho Falls,  Idaho.

"The NABAs are arguably the 3rd largest and most prestigious American awards, conducted as a single blind sampling followed by rank ordering of the entries within a category. The competition provides an opportunity for commercially produced beers to be judged against the best beers in the country. The event is conducted as a single blind sampling followed by rank ordering of the entries within a category." Source: NewSchoolBeer

It had been five years since my wife and I attended and that is way too long to miss this great event. This Blog is a summary of some of our experiences this year.

Day 1:  We left Boise at 8:30 on Thursday and arrived at noon in Pocatello where we stopped for lunch at Penny Pink's Portneuf Brew Pub.

We had a flight of 10 Beers for $10.00 and had a very nice lunch. A visit to the Portneuf Brew Pub is a must for craft brew fans.  Located in the warehouse district, but just a few blocks from the Idaho State University Campus, this is the first brewery in the State of Idaho to be built and and operated by a women brew master.

After our visit to Pocatello's only brewery, we headed north to Idaho Falls.  After checking into our hotel, we boarded a bus headed for Victor, Idaho and the Grand Teton Brewing Company.  The Idaho Brewers United (IBU) and Rob Mullin, head brew master at GTB, hosted a Social Meeting for members and friends.  We had Brats and Beer....a lot of great Grand Teton Beer.  We then listened to two education presentations by staff members of the brewery, before we bought some beer to go and got back on the bus for the 70 minute trip back to the hotel. A little history of the  IBU.

We knew about half the people on the bus, so we got to meet many new brewers and craft beer support people.  We sat across the aisle from Mac, Mickey and Duffy from Mick Duff's Brewing Company in Pondoray, Idaho.  I have been to Mick Duff's Brew Pub before, great little Brew Pub in downtown Pondoray...a must visit on your way to visit Laughing Dog which is just a few miles away. Kerry and Cory sat in front of us on the bus and shared a couple of bottles of the Edge Obligatory IPA.  Behind us were Chris and  Nick, both beer judges from Boise and members of the local Boise Homebrew Clubs.

Day 2:  We headed downtown Idaho Falls and met up with a couple of friends from the Snake River Brewers Home Brew Club.  Steve and Jeremy were both in Idaho Falls to judge the beer in the competition.  After having coffee with Steve and Jeremy, we headed over to The Celt for lunch and beer.  We tried several of the local beers on tap from Idaho Brewing Company and Snow Eagle Brewery.  Then we walk two blocks down the street to MarCellars, a local craft beer and wine bottle shop where we grabbed some hard to find craft beer for our hotel room and trip back to Boise,

We then headed over to the hotel for the Idaho Beer United Annual Meeting where they elected officers and discussed legislation impacting local brewers.  One of the functions of the Idaho Brewers United is a lobby organization.  They represent the voices of all the Commercial Brewers in the state of Idaho at the State, local and Federal Governments. Currently, less than half of Idaho's 50 Breweries are IBU members.  Hopefully over the next couple of years, all of the Idaho Breweries will join the IBU.

At the meeting, \Dan and Chris from Mother Earth provided a selection of their beer.  Great news for Treasure Valley Craft Beer Fans, Mother Earth should be brewing in Nampa by August with the Tap Room open in September.  The meeting lasted from 1 to 3.  After the meeting, we met up with another beer judge friend, Steve from Nampa.   We had a beer on the back patio next to the river and waited for the Awards Ceremony to commence.

There were 1785 entries to this years NABA competition.  There were 96 categories with 3 medals, Gold, Silver & Bronze for each category for a total of 288 medals given out to the winners.  Here is the complete list of winners by category.  And here is the complete list of winners by brewery.

The Awards Ceremony was a blast with lots of cheering and celebrating by those brewers, breweries and fans of  those breweries.  We sat with a group of beer judges from Boise and the Edge Brewing Crew.  In tables around us, we had people from Mother Earth, Mick Duffy's, Salmon River, Grand Teton, Powderhaus, Sockeye, Slanted Rock, Boise Brewing and Bear Island.

Lots of different kinds of beer shared with all the attendees.  Below are some of the photos from the event.

Day 3 The Mountain Brewer's Beer Fest

The NABA Competition brings a lot of people from a lot a breweries across the country and since they  are already in Idaho Falls, many of them bring their beer to the Mountain Brewer's Beer Fest.  Which means there are over 100 breweries with over 300 beers at the Brew Fest.  This Brew Fest draws nearly 7,000 people and raises a lot of money for local charities.

Our Brew Fest Day Experience:  The Buses were going to start leaving the hotel at 11:00 for the Brew Fest, so we went over at 10:30 to check it out.  Found out they started leaving at 10:30, so we got on the bus and were at Sandy Downs by 11:00 where we got in a very long line to wait for the gates to open.  Once the gates were opened at Noon, each person was issued a 2 ounce plastic cup for their beer.  There would two large squares of tables with those serving the beer on the inside and those drinking the beer on the outside.  We started on the North side of the first square.  Since there were 2 of us sharing, we were able to try a lot of new beer.

Just watching the crowd at this event is a lot of fun.  We saw a lot of college age kids that had just turned 21 in the last year and we talked to one Vietnam Was Veteran who had a walker and was having a great time.  A lot of people had pretzel necklaces and others had a lot of bead necklaces.  Some had large sombrero's and some girls had bikini tops.  Everyone was very friendly and became friendlier as the hours passed.

After completing the first square, we took a break for lunch.  There were a lot of food trucks serving food from Cajun Crawfish to BBQ Ribs. There was also a lot of great music coming from assorted local bands.  The only shade was under the beer tents, so we returned to the shade and resumed sampling the beer in the second square of tables.  All in all, we tried beer from a lot of breweries that you can't find in Boise.  Kept track of few on Untappd, but gave up after awhile. Too many beers in a short period of time.

One thing we notice this year was that there were a lot of high ABV beers served.  A lot of Imperial IPA's and a lot of barrel aged Stouts and Porters.  Which meant we had to be very careful.  Just a few of those 2 ounce pours could leave you a little tipsy.  We drank a lot of water and tried to take it slow, but we still had our fill about 4:00 and caught the bus back to the hotel.

Below are a few of the photos that we took at the event.  The photos from inside the tents came out too dark to show.

In Summary, if you love Craft Beer, this is the Brew Fest that you need to attend and it is a short 5 hour drive from Boise.  Highly recommend the trip.  You will have a ton of fun.

Tidbits From the 2015 Black Friday

Tidbits From the 2015 Black Friday by Bob Hubler

Payette Brewing's Black Friday

My wife and I arrived a little after 11:30 and started tasting the beer at 11:45.  We were greeted at the entrance by Mike Francis and Paige Coyle who gladly took our money in exchange for tasting glasses and tokens.

So many choices and so few tokens!  The beer has very high ABV and so a little taste went a long way.  We had a total of 15 tokens and 45 beer choices!!!  So we only able to taste about 1/3 of the beer, but we both would have liked to have tried all 45.  Fortunately, we had already tried some of the beer on the list.

The  long row of Very  Tempting Black Beers

Or if  you need a breather, how about an Outlaw

Our little table with our first of  15 beer samples

We tried 15 beer samples in about 2 hours, and we did not find any that we did not like.  But my favorite was the Bear Island Cherry Imperial Porter from our local Beth Bechtel.  We took home a bottle of the 2015 Twelve Gauge from Payette Brewing.

My Favorite Beer from outside Idaho were Evil Empire (Bourbon  Barrel Aged) from Heretic, Dark Truth Stout from Boulevard, Wild Turkey Bourbon Barrel Stout from Anderson, and Motherland Russian Imperial Stout from HUB!  But there were many other great beers that we got to sample.

We hope many of you got the chance to make this event this year, but if you did not make it down this year, put it on your list for 2016.  Thanks Mike and the Crew for putting this event together!

Update from Mother Earth

We got to visit with Daniel Love from Mother Earth Brew Co. while we were at Black Friday.  Dan and his wife have bought their home in Idaho and have moved in.  He told us that Mike Westley, his Area Sales manager has decided to move to Boise also.  Dan has done a lot of traveling across Idaho promoting his brand.  He said that he has been to Teton in Eastern Idaho and to Sandpoint in  northern Idaho and is getting to know how large our state really is!!!!

The ground breaking on the Nampa Brewery will not happen until February, but the brewing equipment has been ordered and they are in the process of applying for all the local, state and federal licenses.  Dan still hopes to be brewing by June in his new production brewery.  I  told him it would probably be closer to August, but I am hoping for June  too.

The City Peanut Shop

Dan from City Peanut Shop
We got some snacks  from Dan at the City Peanut Shop Booth.   All  really good, but the caramel corn flavored with Centennial Hops was really special.  Sweet up front with that hop bitter at the back.  We really like to shop at the City Peanut Shop for Christmas Stocking Stuffers.  Well worth the visit when you are in downtown Boise.

News from Post Modern Brewers

After we left the Black Friday Black Beer Event, we stopped by The Grind/Post Modern Brewers to warm up and have a Great Grind Burger.

While there, we got to visit with Head Brewer Marvin Kinney who had some very interesting news about Simian Brewing. Marvin is still persuing his dream of owning and operating his own brewery, most likely to be located in Canyon County.

Come Down and Celebrate The First Anniversary of The Grind/Post Modern Brewers on Wednesday, December 2nd.  Click Here for Details

While at Post Modern Brewers, we met Jen Anderson.  Jen works at the PreFunk in Meridian Idaho.   She invited us to stop by and check it out, so we went there on our way  back home.

PreFunk Meridian

This was our first visit to the Meridian Version of the PreFunk Growler Fill Station/Beer Bar. Click here for their Facebook page.

The first thing we noticed was the great ambiance of the downstairs beer bar.  Reminded me a little of the Cheers Bar in the old TV show.  This is the third and newest PreFunk in the Valley and provides the same great beer choices of the first two.  This one is larger and has more tables and a larger bar.  Great place to stop and have a beer and get your growler filled.

We got a bottle of the Goose Island 2015 Bourbon County Brand Stout while we were there.  The highly sought after beer was in the back, so we had to ask for it.  Then we filled our Growler  with some Brown Shugga and headed home.
